Psychological testing is a focus of our practice. Often these assessments are for students to figure out why they are not progressing academically the way they would like, but could also help provide an objective diagnosis for what may be impacting your life.
Things like diagnosing learning differences (learning disability), attention disorders, processing issues, or understanding how to best learn new material are common questions that people have when seeking testing. Many people also pursue this type of testing to see if they would be eligible for accommodations in school, college, or for standardized testing situations like the SAT or ACT.
Sometimes people have seen different clinicians and been given multiple diagnoses that may or may not be accurate. Or sometimes a doctor wants to be sure about your diagnosis before treating diagnoses with medication(s) to avoid possible problematic interactions. Testing can provide a differential diagnosis so you can have more confidence into what is actually causing your problems and with that, you can gain a more informed set of recommendations for what to do next.
We can help with all of these needs. Our practice is unique in that we do accept insurance to pay for your psychological assessment, which can sometimes save you thousands of dollars over paying out of pocket.
How Things Work
Initial Consultation
The process to begin testing begins by calling and scheduling an initial consultation appointment. During that appointment we will talk about why you are looking to have testing done, background information, and what you hope to gain from having testing done. If testing will help to answer the questions or concerns that you have, we will talk about the testing that is recommended and how the process will work.
Testing may not always be the best way to gain the information that you need. If that is the case, we will suggest alternatives to testing that may be faster or cheaper. If testing is recommended and you're looking to have insurance cover your assessment, we will submit a preauthorization to your insurance company. We'll delay scheduling testing until we have authorization so you will know what your coverage is before testing begins.
Testing Session
Once we have an authorization to complete testing from your insurance company we will call to schedule an appointment to return to the office for testing. It is not always known how long testing will take to complete because every person is different in how long it may take them. Ultimately we want to get the best performance that we can for as long as we can and if that means that we have to take more than one session to complete testing, then that is what we will do. There is no point in forcing someone to continue to do testing if the best effort is not being given.
Once testing is completed we will score all of the tests, interpret the results, and put all of this information into a comprehensive report. This report will include background information provided at the initial consultation appointment, results of all tests given, a summary of the results including any diagnoses that may apply, and recommendations (whether there is a diagnosis or not) to address your strengths and weaknesses.
Feedback Session
After testing is completed, we will meet again for a feedback session to go over the report that is created. We will discuss the results, diagnoses, and recommendations. You will have the time to ask any questions that you may have about testing, the results, the recommendations, or how to use the information that is gained from testing.
The entire assessment process from the time that the Initial Consultation is completed typically takes two to three months.
